A swarm of earthquakes recorded in Katla caldera, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes 1964

A swarm of earthquakes was recorded in Katla caldera, Mývatnsjökull glacier, last night, reports Morgunblaðið newspaper. The swarm began at 01.47. The largest quakes measured 4.6 on the Richter scale – making it the most powerful earthquake recorded in the area.

Water levels in Bláfjallakvísl glacial river (which has its source north of Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland) have also been unusually high in the past days.

The seismic activity is linked to Katla, one of the largest volcanoes is Iceland. It is situated north of the village of Vík í Mýrdal and is partially covered by Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Katla is very active and normally erupts every 40–80 years. 20 eruptions have been documented between 930 and 1918. Its last large eruption happened 98 years ago, although there have been smaller eruptions that did not break Mýrdalsjökull‘s ice cover, including ones in 1955,1999, and 2011

The Icelandic Met Office continues to closely monitor the area.
