A new shopping- and tourist centre is to be built in the village of Vík in South Iceland. The new centre would include a super-market and a large restaurant and grill, as well as clothing and souvenir store. The owner of the clothing manufacturer Icewear is behind the development. Icewear, which operates a clothing factory in Vík, is one of the largest employers in the village.

Ágúst Þór Eiríksson, the manager and owner of Icewear, told the local news site visir.is that the explosion in the number of travellers who pass through Vík was also straining the infrastructure and services of the town. At the same time it had created a huge demand for an increase in the level and variety of services for tourists in Vík. The tourism centre would offer a large public lavatory, and ample parking. The new shopping- and tourism centre is expected to create 15-20 new jobs in this village which has a little over 300 inhabitants.
