The number of single-lane bridges on the Ring Road between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón will be reduced from fourteen to eight in the next five years. By 2033 the number of single lane bridges on this stretch of the main traffic artery of Iceland will have been reduced to just two.
Numerous traffic accidents, including fatal accidents, have occurred on single-lane bridges in recent years. On Christmas 2015 a Japanese traveler died in a head-on collision on a single lane bridge in Öræfi district in SE Iceland. Eliminating these bridges has been a high priority.

According to the National Roadway Plan for 2019-2023 the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority plans to renew a number of single-lane bridges between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón in the coming years. The Minister of Transportation told parliament recently that by 2033 the number of single-lane bridges on this part of the Ring Road will have been reduced to just two.
The last two holdouts will be the 440 m (1,444 ft) long bridge over the river Súla on Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash plain in SE Iceland and the 108 m (354 ft) long bridge over the river Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi. Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi connects Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to the ocean.
