A powerful earthquake, magnitude 3.1 on the Richter scale, was detected in the eastern part of the Katla caldera at 1:02 AM, Sunday morning. The 3.1 magnitude quake was followed by a series of smaller quakes. The earthquake swarm lasted an hour, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
This latest quake follows a second powerful earthquake last Tuesday.

Katla has been quite active in th epast several weeks. Last week alone saw at least 80 earthquakes in Myrdalsjokull, in the Katla caldera, the IMO reports. A total of more than 400 earthquakes in Iceland. The main centers of activity last week, in addition to Katla, was the Bárðarbunga system beneath Vatnajökull glacier and in the Central Highlands north of Vatnajökull and the North Atlantic Ridge, north of Iceland.
