A photograph of the Northern Lights dancing over Jökulsárlón won the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 photo competition 127

The Royal Observatory Greenwich recently announced the winning images of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 photo competition. The institute received a record 1700 entries from astrophotographers in over 50 countries. A stunning photograph of the Northern Lights dancing above Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, South East Iceland, was this year‘s Earth and Space category winner and the competition’s over-all winner.

The beautiful photograph, entitled Aurora over a Glacier Lagoon, was taken by James Woodend from the UK. The Earth and Space category is for photos that include landscape, people or other 'Earthly' things along with an astronomical subject.
