A new walking path is being constructed in the mountain hills of Esja, which dominates the view to the north of Reykjavík. The mountain is a popular destination, both among locals and foreign travellers who enjoy hiking up its hills to enjoy the view.
Moved to protect wetlands, increase safety
Parts of the old path could not handle the growing traffic, especially a strip which ran through Einarsmýri, a patch of wetlands in the hill of the mountain. Magnús Bjarklind an engineer who is overseeing the project, told local newspaper Morgunblaðið that parts of the old path were becoming “quite unsightly”, as the path, and the ground underneath it could not handle the traffic.
The new path will be constructed along drier grounds to protect and reclaim the wetlands. Magnús stresses that the new path will fit in with its surroundings, and that moving the path will “increase the safety of hikers, while at the same time allow us to repair damage to the wetland in Einarsmýri and reclaim plant life which had been lost.
