A group has been created on Facebook as a venue for discussion whether a new right-wing political party should be established in Iceland.
Lawyer, Sveinn Andri Sveinsson, has created the group under the pretenses that the Independence Party, Iceland's largest political party, is likely to divide itself due to disagreements on matters concerning Iceland and the European Union.
Sveinn Andri says that many people voted for the Independence Party in last year’s elections because they believed the EU-accession talks would continue. Now that a bill has been put in motion in Parliament to withdraw from the talks, voters feel betrayed.
Who would lead this new party is still undecided, but Sveinsson told ruv.is he’d be interested in having former Prime Minister and Independence Party Leader, Þorsteinn Pálsson, at the forefront of the new party.
