People in towns and on farms in North Iceland are bracing themselves for a major blizzard that is expected to hit the region on Wednesday night and last until Friday.
The storm will drop plenty of snow, with big impact on travel and even homes in the area as experts have predicted that the weather might lead to power outages.
According to The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) the wind will start picking up the pace in the afternoon in North Iceland and reach strong gale force strength (wind speeds over 20 m/s or more than 45 mph/72 km/h) Wednesday evening.
The weather will be much different in Southwest Iceland with lighter winds and less precipitation.
IMO’s forecast
Thursday: North wind 15 to 23 m/s (33-55 mph/54-83 km/h) and considerable snow or blowing snow in the northern parts of the country, strongest winds by the northeastern coastline but lighter winds and less precipitation in the south. Frost widely 0 to 5 degrees Celsius (32-41 F), above freezing point along the south coast.
Friday and Saturday: Stiff northerly wind with snow showers but rather light winds and fair in the south and west parts. Frost widely 0 to 5 degrees Celsius (32-41 F), but above freezing point in some areas along the coast.
