The Institute of Earth Sciences has issued a new map of the lava flow from the ongoing Holuhraun eruption. The map, based on radar images from a recent surveillance flight by the Icelandic Coast Guard, shows that the lava now covers an area 60.7 km2 (60.3 km2 + 0.4 km2) in size. For comparison, Manhattan island, New York, covers and area 59.5 km2 (22.96 sq mi) in size.
Seismic activity near the Bárðarbunga caldera remains steady. An earthquake of magnitude M5.4 was detected in the northern caldera rim on Sunday morning. It was one of the largest quakes having been detected since the eruption began in August.
The IMO warns that gas emissions from the Holuhraun eruption can be expected in East Iceland and later Southeast Iceland today and tomorrow.
