The Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting significant Aurora activity tonight, and mostly clear skies over Iceland. The IMO forecasts a grade four activity, active on its 1-9 activity scale. The skies over Iceland are expected to be clear during the evening and into the night, although major glaciers, parts of the Central Highlands and stretches of the south coast will have cloudy skies. Early morning heavier clouds are expected in West and South-West Iceland, while the Aurora activity is expected to rise to a grade 5, high.

IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling. Grade 4 activity has the potential of creating a magnificent show.
The weather can change with a relatively short notice, and Aurora hunters are therefore advised to check the forecast for cloud cover before they head out looking for the Aurora. Be sure to dress warmly if you are heading into the night as it will be rather chilly around the country. The temperature in W. Iceland will range from -2°C to -5°C.
