An earthquake of magnitude M5.5 struck in the northern part of Bárðarbunga caldera at 3.09 am this morning. This is one of the largest earthquakes detected in the area since seismic activity began on August 16th, according to experts at the Icelandic Met Office.
The Holuhraun eruption continues at a similar rate as yesterday. New lava now covers more than 7 km2 (2.7 mi) or more than double the size of New York's Central Park.
