According to a poll conducted by the local TV station Stöð 2 and newspaper Fréttablaðið, the president of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, enjoys nearly unanimous support by the public. A whopping 97% of respondents said they were pleased with the president now that he has been in office for four and a half months.

Since his election Guðni has made a point of reducing the pomp and circumstance which characterized the president during the five terms of his predecessor, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.
During his term in office Guðni has already been involved in one of the most difficult and complex negotiations to form a coalition government in Iceland‘s history. His background as a presidential historian has come in handy during these negotiations.

Guðni, who is a former professor of history at the University of Iceland, was sworn in on August 1, becoming the sixth president of Iceland. He succeeded Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the longest serving president in Iceland‘s history. Ólafur Ragnar had served five terms, and was at the time of his retirement one of the longest serving democratically elected heads of state in the world.
