850 million ISK to be spent on upgrading 51 tourist destinations around Iceland 1114

Around 850 million ISK (5,743,631 Euros/ 6,261,510 US dollars) are to be spent on upgrading 51 popular tourist destinations around Iceland, reports Fréttablaðið newspaper.

According to the Ministry of Industries and Innovation, Icelandic nature has been the foundation upon which a blooming tourism industry has been built – an industry that has become a valuable source of foreign exchange for Iceland.

Upgrading tourist facilities at popular destinations will help relieve pressure on those spots and help strengthen tourism in Iceland.

Skaftafell National Park, in Southeast Iceland, received the largest amount of money, around 160 million ISK (1,081,154 Euros/ 1,178,637 US dollars). Þingvellir National Park in South Iceland, Dimmuborgir in North Iceland, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall in South Iceland, Dynjandi waterfall in the Westfjords and Teigarhorn nature reserve in East Iceland are among the destinations that are to be upgraded.
