The organizers of the third Iceland Geothermal Conference are expecting as at least 800-1000 participants from more than 40 countries will be attending the conference which will be held in Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík on April 26-29. The conference will be among the largest of its kind in the world.

The conference, which has will focus on the many advantages and uses of geothermal energy is organized around the three themes of operability, feasibility and practicality. Each topic has several lectures and workshops, dealing with the challenges involved in operating geothermal plants, the question why some projects are more successful than others and the responses to an ever increasing demand for greater and more efficient utilization of this resource. All in all there will be more than 60 different lectures from speakers from over 20 countries.

The keynote speaker at the conference is Harvard Business School professor Michael E. Porter, one of the most influential business thinkers of today, and the “godfather” of the Icelandic Geothermal Cluster, which hosts the conference. Other keynote speakers include Adnan Z. Amin, the director general of IRENA-International Renewable Energy Agency, an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in transitioning to a sustainable energy future, Rachel Kyte, the CEO of the Committee of Sustainable Energy for All, a global network to expand sustainable energy use, supported by the UN and the World Bank.
Three leaders of the geothermal and renewable energy sector in Iceland, Hörður Arnason the CEO of Landsvirkjun the National Power Company and Ásgeir Argeirsson, CEO of HS Energy which operates two major geothermal power plants in South West Iceland, as well as Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Patron of the conference is Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the President of Iceland.

The Iceland Geothermal Cluster promises that the IGC will help make Iceland the logical centre of discussions about the future of the geothermal energy industry and the global debate about the most current topics in renewable energy.
