73% watched duel of two top contenders to represent Iceland at Eurovision song contest 6172

A remarkable 97% of TV viewers on Saturday night in Iceland were watching the grand final of the six songs which competed to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest. According to figures released by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV, which broadcasted the grand final, 73% of Icelanders tuned in to the program on Saturday evening. Out of those who were actually watching TV on Saturday night, 97% were tuned to RÚV.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the largest TV events in Iceland each year. Iceland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1986, twice coming in second place, in 1999 and 2009. 

Out of the six songs which competed in the grand final to represent Iceland at Eurovision, which will be held in Kieve in May, with the two most popular songs, as determined by viewers who voted by text message for their favorite entry, were Paper, performed by Selma, and Is this Love? performed by Daði. Selma received 79,570 votes, and Daði 47,722 votes. A total of 243,000 votes were cast for the different songs.
