Widespread ice is expected all over the country after last night’s heavy rain. Eight trucks from the Reykjavík Public Service are out spreading sand or salt on the city’s roads. According to the National Broadcasting Service around 70 tonnes (154,324 pounds) of sand will be spread on Reykjavík’s roads today.
Road conditions elsewhere in the country are rather poor. Strong blasts of wind are expected near Hafnarfjall, Borgarfjörður in West Iceland, and in the northern parts of Snæfellsnes peninsula, across Holtavörðuheiði and Laxárdalsheiði.
Extremely slick roads are reported all over the Westfjords, in Northwest Iceland and in the northeast.
Slippery roads are the main cause of traffic accidents in Iceland – be sure to leave a good space between your car and the car in front of you when driving in these conditions.
