A survey conducted by local newspaper Fréttablaðið shows that a majority of Icelanders also want finance minister and chairperson of the Independence Party, Bjarni Benediktsson, and the minister of interior Ólöf Nordal to resign following the Panama Paper revelations. Both their names appear in the leaked files.
69 % of respondents want Bjarni to step down as minister of finance. 63 % want Ólöf to resign as minister of interior.
Bjarni owned part in a company called Falson & Co, which was set up in the Seychelles. According to the Guardian Bjarni’s interest in Falson was held through bearer share certificates, which do not record the name of the owner. Ólöf, who is also the Independence Party‘s vice-chairperson, and her husband had power of attorney over Dooley Securities, a company created in the British Virgin Islands in November 2006.
Ólöf Nordal was appointed minister of the interior in December 2014, replacing Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, who resigned from her post in late November after her assistant, Gísli Freyr Valdórsson, confessed to leaking information about an asylum seeker to the press.
