Outdoor clothing brand 66 North designs custom-made down jackets filled with premium eiderdown. A single jacket can cost up to one million ISK (7,360 Euros/8,178 USD).
According to Viðskiptablaðið newspaper, the Æðey down jacket is not available in stores and only made to order. Icelandic eiderdown is hand-picked, limited and costly but achieves great warmth without added weight to the garment.
Helgi Rúnar Óskarsson, 66 North’s CEO, explains the jacket’s price varies greatly as it is based upon size, design adjustments and the amount of down used. Most of those who purchase an Æðey jacket are foreigners.
Eiderdown are small, soft feathers from the breast of the female eider duck. Much of the world’s eiderdown production takes place in Iceland, where around 2,500 kg (5,511 pounds) is harvested every year. What makes eiderdown so expensive is the limited supply – the down comes solely from wild female birds and is the only type of down that is not plucked from live birds.
