The severe storm sweeping over the country has reached its peak strength and is expected to subside shortly after midnight. The heavy winds have wreaked havoc in many areas, most notably along Iceland’s south coast.

According to the National Broadcasting Service, a number of homes in Vestmannaeyjar Islands have been evacuated due to the storm, where winds are so strong that they tore apart the anemometer located at Stórhöfði.

Rescue teams in south Iceland were called in to assist a man that was believed to be left stranded at his home at Lambafell, under Eyjafjöll mountain range, after winds tore the roof off his house, but thankfully those reports were wrong and the man and the building were unscathed (Updated at 23.10.)

The severe storm also resulted in a power shortage in the village of Vík in Mýrdalur valley, south Iceland.

Rescue teams had been called 138 times by 9.30 pm this evening. 650 team members have been working through the evening to assist residents in locations all over the country.
