The strong seismic activity in Bárðarbunga volcano that began August 16th shows no sign of abating. According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) more than 60 earthquakes were detected in the huge caldera in the past 24 hours. The largest, M5.1, struck at 22.39 (10.39pm) last evening.

This relentless activity is making Icelandic scientists deeply concerned. According to volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson there are no records of a volcano behaving this way.

The eruption in Holuhraun also continuous with same force. Challenging conditions in the area make field observations very difficult. Holuhraun is located in the central highlands North of Vatnajökull glacier in an area that is usually only accessible from July to September and then only by using big 4wd vehicles.
