The number of passengers travelling through Keflavík International Airport is estimated to reach a record 6 million in 2016, according to the National Broadcasting Service. A total of 25 airlines will operate scheduled flights from the airport to 86 destinations worldwide.

Keflavík International Airport is forecast to become even busier in 2016 as 6 million people are expected to fly through the airport, a 25 percent increase from 2015. Five new international carriers will use the airport in 2016 and Icelandic airlines Wow Air and Icelandair have added a number of new destinations to their network, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Aberdeen.

This summer, the ever growing number of foreign visitors caused extensive queues and some major grievances among travellers using the airport. Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, the airport’s assistant manager, says busy days and queues are unavoidable with such a huge increase in traveller numbers.

“Now that Wow Air has announced two new destinations to their network, it’s clear that we could be looking at a higher number than 6 million passengers. As of now it’s uncertain how that will affect the operation of the airport.”
