The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that figures from Isavia, which operates the Keflavík Airport, show that the growing number of airline seats offered has led to a corresponding increase in the number of visitors from the corresponding country. For example the number of airline seats from the US increased by 77% in February at the same time as the number of travellers from the US increased by 77%.
The close correlation between the increase in the number of seats offered and the number of travellers increases the confidence in projections for the number of foreign visitors in Iceland in 2017 and 2018. Projections envision the number of visitors will reach 2.2 million this year, and 2.5 million in 2018.
