4,363 children born in Iceland in 2014, slightly below what is needed to sustain the population 396

According to the most recent birth report by the Directorate of Health the fertility rate of Icelandic women is just below the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman needed to sustain current population levels. In 2014 4.363 children were born in Iceland, giving a fertility rate of 1.93 children per woman.

According to the local newspaper Fréttablaðið the number of births in 2014 was similar to the year before, but significantly below 2009 and 2010. 2009 was a record year, with 5,015 children born.

Most of the children born in 2014 were born at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík. Nearly 75% of all births took place at the University Hospital. Only 2.2% or 93 births took place at home or outside of hospitals.
