An estimated 40 cruise ships will dock in the Westman Islands this summer, compared to 20 ships last year.
According to Morgunblaðið the island’s small and narrow harbour cannot accommodate larger cruise ships. Port manager Ólafur Þór Snorrason say a dry dock would accommodate large cruise ships as well as freighters and wants the town to construct one in the near future.

Cruise ships would provide a boost for tourism in the area and give visitors easy access to unique tourist attractions such as Eldfell volcano, the Pompeii of the North museum, Surtsey Visitors Centre and of course Iceland's largest puffin colony.
