Four young Britons have embarked on an arduous journey across Iceland’s highlands in winter. Should they succeed, the young men will become the first, and youngest, people to do so completely unsupported.
The group will begin the expedition, named The Coldest Crossing, on alpine skis, hauling self-made pulks that contain all the food, clothing and equipment needed to complete the expedition. The journey will take 18 days and involve crossing glaciers, glacial rivers and streams and snow covered lava fields.
According to Charlie Smith, who leads the expedition, they have experienced some setbacks on the way. One expedition member had to return home due to a lung infection and another suffered frostbite and was transported to hospital from Nýidalur.
