The Landowners Association in Reykjahlíð, north Iceland, intends to collect an entrance fee to Dettifoss waterfall, Leirhnjúkur volcano and the hot springs located east of Námafjall mountain, this summer. The Icelandic Tourist Board has expressed strong disapproval on the controversial entrance fee.
According to the website Naturefee.com, landowners argue that the aforementioned spots are badly marred by the ever increasing number of tourists visiting them each year and fear they will soon be destroyed beyond repair. The revenue generated by ticket sales will be used to repair the sites and improve tourist facilities. What more, Vatnajökull National Park has been aloted a 40 million krónur (258.548 euros) grant from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to construct walking paths around Dettifoss waterfall, Northeast Iceland.
To visit all three spots one must pay 2888 krónur, which equates to 19 euros. Tickets can be booked online on the website Naturefee.com. Dettifoss waterfall can be reached by different routes and viewed from different angles, most of which are free of charge.
