This year will break previous records for the number of cruise ship arrivals, the local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports. This year‘s first cruise ships arrival was also earlier than ever before, as the first visit in Reykjavík was on 6 March, two weeks earlier than the year before.  The summer season is also on track to beat previous records, with more ships and passengers than ever before, as well as stretching further into the fall than in previous years.

The peak travel season for cruise ships begins this weekend. The Reykjavík harbour authority is expecting at least one cruise ship will be in harbour virtually every single day until mid-September. The last cruise ships of the year are expected in mid-October.

Most of the ships that come to Iceland visit more than one harbour. Most come to Reykjavík and Akureyri, but many also visit smaller towns around Iceland. A total of 113 ships are expected in Reykjavík and 100 in Akureyri, carrying at least 109,000 passengers to Reykjavik and 95,000 to Akureyri.

This year‘s record will likely be beaten next year, since 107 ships have already booked an arrival in Reykjavík in 2017, and more are still being added.
