Work on expanding the airport terminal to meet this growing traffic is currently under way. Isavia expects to add roughly 9,000 square meters (96,875 sq f) to the terminal building this year, and 7,000 (75,350 sq f) in 2017. Current plans envision adding 70,000 square meters (753,500 sq f) by 2032, which would mean a doubling of its size.
New gas station and strip mall to be built near the airport
The growing traffic through the airport has also created a need for increased service in the vicinity. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that the Consumer Cooperative of Suðurnes, the largest groceries retailer in the region, has announced plans to build a new strip mall near the airpot, the local news site visir.is reports. The strip mall will include a small supermarket, a gas station, a coffee shop and retail and service aimed at travellers. Construction of the new centre, which will be located by the last roundabout before travellers reach the airport, is expected to start in early 2017.
