According to figures released by Statistics Iceland today the number of booked nights at hotels in Iceland increased by 20% in January 2016 compared to January 2015. The total number of booked nights last month was 193,200. The largest group of hotel guests came from Britain, followed by US. British travellers booked 68,500 nights at Icelandic hotels in January, while US visitors booked 37,900 nights. The third largest group were Germans, who booked 12,500 nights.
Statistics Iceland points out that the accumulated 12 month figure for January 2015-January 2016 stands at 2,879,400, which represents a 23% increase over the previous twelve months.
High occupancy rates in international comparison
The occupancy rate in Reykjavík hotels in January 2016 was 68%, which is quite high in international comparison, especially considering the fact that January is well outside the peak tourist months. According to Eurostat the average net occupancy rates of bed places in hotels and similar establishments in the EU during the peak months of July to September in 2015 was 59%.
