The local news site vísir reports that first responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Search and rescue teams had to set up climbing lines to transport the boy to level ground, as the site where he fell was extremely steep. The boy was then taken by a Coast Guard helicopter to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík where he is being treated.

A spokesman for the Police in South Iceland told Vísir that the boy had been climbing in the hills south of the waterfall, outside marked walking paths. Accidents are rare in the hillsides next to Seljalandsfoss. He said that the teen had been walking with his mother in the hillside. The mother then left the boy returning to level ground. When she came back she found him lying at the foot of the steep hillside.

The boy broke his leg in the fall.
