10 events you need to attend during 2016 DesignMarch 4480

The annual design festival DesignMarch kicks off today, Thursday. The fair features over one hundred exhibitions, workshops, and other events taking place over a period of four days. Here are 10 interesting events not to miss this week.

 

1.     Inner garden
Where: Þjóðmenningarhúsið museum, Hverfisgata 15
The exhibition features woven and knitted pieces of art by Signe Emdal. The artwork is described as a contemporary take of the classic tapestry popular in 16th century Europe.
 

2.     Eldheimar museum
Where: Vestmannaeyjar Islands, South Iceland
The Eldheimar museum reflects on the dramatic events that took place during http://icelandmag.is/article/westman-islands-are-pompeii-north1973 eruption on Heimaey island. Last year, the museum received the 2015 Icelandic Design Award. DesignMarch offers a special day tour to Eldheimar which includes the flight from Reykjavík airport, a guided tour of Heimaey island, a light lunch at restaurant Einsi Kaldi and a visit to Eldheimar museum.

3.     Farmers market for 10 years – Past, present, future
Where: Farmers market, Hólmaslóð 2, Grandi harbour area
When: Friday, 11 March at 8 pm
Clothing brand Farmers market showcases their latest collection in celebration of the company’s 10 year anniversary. Country charm, sustainability and staying power are, as always, hallmarks of the label’s design. Icelandic fashion design at its best.
 

4.     Oddsson by Döðlur
Where: Oddsson Hostel, Hringbraut 21
When: Saturday, 12 March between 1-7 pm.
The Reykjavík based design studio Döðlur is responsible for the overall look of the Oddsson, which is scheduled to open this spring. On Saturday, guests are given a chance to view the place in all its glory before it formally opens.
 

5.     The art of graphic storytelling
Where: Íslenski sjávarklasinn (The Ocean Cluster House), Grandagarður 16, Grandi harbour area
Graphic storytelling by Nikki Kurt creates mindful marks that express the emotional power of words.
 

6.     DesignWalk
Where: Hverfisgata 39
This educational walking tour focuses on design, architecture and the general history of Reykjavík and its settlement. Among the places visited are Spark Design Space, Iceland’s only gallery dedicated to design and a number of DesignMarch related spaces.
The tour takes around 2­-3 hours and is scheduled for noon on March 12 and 13. Private tours outside the scheduled hours are available on request.
 

7.     Ceramic snacks at AALTO Bistro
Where: Nordic House, Sturlugata 5
Design meets food. Guests are given the opportunity to sample delicious tidbits from Aalto Bistro’s head chef served on gorgeous ceramics created by members of the Icelandic Association of Ceramic Artists.

8.     Magnea AW16
Where: Dansverkstæðið at Skúlagata
When: Saturday, 12 March at 7.30 pm
Knitwear designer Magnea Einarsdóttir presents her AW16 collection at the dance studio Dansverkstæðið (next to Kex Hostel) on Saturday. Magnea is known for her interesting textiles, mostly knits, and simple cuts. The young designer gained international acclaim after having been recruited by Club Monaco to create an exclusive capsule collection for the international clothing retailer.

9.     Omnom Land, from design to bean to bar
Where: Omnom, Hólmaslóð 4, Grandi harbour area
When: Saturday 11am to 5 pm and Sunday 1-5 pm.
The Icelandic bean-to-bar manufacturer Omnom has been featured in Vogue UK’s Life’s Little Luxuries. This exhibition showcases the evolution of Omnom chocolate from a to z. What more, guests are allowed to sample the tasty products.
 

10.    North Limited
Where: Hannesarholt, Grundarstígur 10
The Icelandic design collaboration North Limited was established by three designers, who each work under their own brand: Bybibi, Færid, and Guðrún Vald.  The company showcases a collection of home furnishings, tableware and accessories at Hannersarholt during DesignMarch.
