1.8 million people visited Iceland in 2016, a 39% increase over 2015 1889

The total number of foreign travellers who visited Iceland in 2016 was 1.8 million. This represents an increase of 39% over the year before, when 1.3 million foreign travellers visited Iceland. 

The local news site gestur reports that almost all foreign visitors came by flight through Keflavík Airport: 98.6% of visitors came through the airport. Just 4,700 travellers, or 0.3% of the total, came by flight through other airports, including the Reykjavík downtown airport. The rest came by ship. Some 20,000 people travellers arrived by the Norræna ferry through Seyðisfjörður harbor, 1.1% of the total, and 98,700 by cruise ships. 

The number of visitors coming by cruise ship fell by 1.5% in 2016, compared to 2015.
