Iconic Icelandic Destination Resumes Operations with a Focus on Safety and Visitor Experience

After a month-long closure prompted by seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the renowned Blue Lagoon has triumphantly reopened its doors. In a significant step towards normalcy, the Lava restaurant and Lón’s spa have also resumed operations. However, the Silica and Retreat hotels, accompanied by the Moss restaurant, remain temporarily closed.

Despite the eagerly awaited reopening, certain restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. The Blue Lagoon is now accessible to visitors between eleven in the morning and eight in the evening. Notably, the beloved establishment, attracting nearly half of Iceland’s tourists, has faced challenges as reports indicate some travelers canceling their trips due to its closure.

Helga Árnadóttir, CEO of Blue Lagoon’s sales, operations, and services, expresses her delight at returning to business. Recognizing the pivotal role the Blue Lagoon plays in Iceland’s tourism, she acknowledges the impact on travel plans, citing feedback from both airlines and the tourism industry.

In light of ongoing construction efforts on defensive walls, the initial four days post-reopening will see visitors transported to the Blue Lagoon via buses. This strategic measure, relayed to prospective guests, aims to avoid interference with the construction area and guarantees a seamless visitor experience.

Addressing safety concerns, Árnadóttir reveals that a comprehensive safety drill was conducted, involving a significant number of employees. The success of the drill, simulating a swift evacuation of the area, reinforces the commitment to guest and staff safety.

Despite the positive momentum, the Blue Lagoon Hotel remains closed, with a reevaluation scheduled for December 21. Árnadóttir emphasizes the collaborative efforts with authorities, prioritizing the well-being of guests and staff. As the iconic destination cautiously resumes operations, visitors can once again experience the allure of the Blue Lagoon amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland.
