A group of people recently ventured into Iceland’s interior in order to connect the area around Landmannahellir cave to a mobile phone network. According to Channel 2 News, the crew included members of rescue teams, members of tour operator Hellismen (who service the hut at Landmannahellir) and electricians.

A mobile base station was installed next to the Landmannahellir mountain hut, which is located within the Fjallabak nature reserve, 600 metres above sea level. The area is not easily accessible at this time of year due to melting snow and muddy quagmires.
According to Channel 2 News, park rangers can now connect to the internet, operate a credit card machine and place telephone-calls over an IP network.
